1 800 686 9921Father Francis Patrick Lavelle was ordained in 1970 and served within the Diocese of Springfield, Massachusetts. Multiple credible allegations of the sexual abuse of minors were made against him across different points in his ministry. In July 2002, two men filed civil suits alleging abuse during their teenage years — one describing abuse that occurred in 1972, and another reporting abuse in 1980, during a period when Lavelle was serving as secretary to the Bishop. Four brothers filed suit in December 2003 alleging abuse by Lavelle and four other priests during a period spanning 1967 to 1983.
The Diocese of Springfield permanently barred Lavelle from ministry in February 2004. Two of his accusers were included in a July 2004 settlement of more than $7.75 million that resolved claims brought by dozens of survivors against the Diocese. Additional claims involving Lavelle were resolved in 2008. The administrative process against him required Vatican approval, and in 2010, Lavelle was assigned a life of prayer and penance. He is included on the Diocese of Springfield’s list of credibly accused clergy.

The civil litigation record surrounding Father Francis Patrick Lavelle is extensive, involving multiple lawsuits filed across different years and claims brought by survivors whose alleged abuse spanned a significant portion of his ministry. The volume and consistency of these allegations, involving multiple individuals at different points in time, reflects a pattern that institutional oversight should have identified far earlier.
The allegation that sexual abuse occurred while Lavelle served as secretary to the Bishop is particularly significant. That role placed him in direct contact with diocesan leadership, raising questions about whether those in positions of authority had any awareness of his conduct and whether that awareness shaped the institutional response. Civil litigation allows survivors to examine internal communications, personnel decisions, and supervisory failures that may have permitted misconduct to persist across multiple assignments.
The settlements reached in 2004 and 2008 demonstrate that survivors were able to pursue civil accountability and that the Diocese engaged in the resolution of claims. Each survivor’s situation is unique, and an attorney can help evaluate whether a civil claim may be available.
