1 800 686 9921Father Edmund W. Croke was ordained in 1928 and served as a priest in the Archdiocese of Boston, Massachusetts, from his ordination until his death on April 21, 1971, with multiple parish assignments throughout his ministry.
Croke died on April 21, 1971. Decades later, his personnel file was among those released by the Archdiocese in January 2003 in connection with litigation alleging the sexual abuse of at least one child.
In August 2011, the Archdiocese of Boston included Croke’s name on its publicly released list of clergy against whom allegations of sexual misconduct had been raised, noting that no formal determination of guilt was made — either because he died before a canonical investigation could be conducted or because any such investigation was not completed at the time of his death.
These disclosures represent a step toward acknowledging the allegations raised against Father Croke, and toward recognizing the harm that abuse of this nature can cause to those who experienced it.

Survivors who were sexually abused by Father Edmund W. Croke may be able to pursue civil claims against the Archdiocese of Boston, which released his personnel file in January 2003 in connection with litigation alleging sexual abuse and subsequently included his name on its August 2011 list of accused clergy. Those disclosures reflect an institutional decision to publicly document allegations connected to Croke’s ministry, consistent with the Archdiocese’s stated commitment to transparency regarding historical abuse.
Civil litigation may provide an opportunity to seek access to internal records related to Croke’s assignments and any concerns documented during his decades of parish ministry. The release of his personnel file in connection with active litigation suggests that institutional records exist that may shed light on what was known about his conduct and how that information was handled over time.
A civil case may provide survivors with an opportunity to be heard and to seek compensation for therapy, emotional distress, and long-term psychological harm. Such cases may also allow survivors to seek formal examination of the Archdiocese’s supervisory responsibilities during Croke’s ministry, and to pursue a more complete accounting of the institutional decisions surrounding the handling and eventual disclosure of allegations against him.
