Father Charles J. Murphy served in the Archdiocese of Boston, Massachusetts, and was the subject of multiple allegations of sexual misconduct over the course of his ministry. In May 2004, a civil lawsuit was filed in connection with alleged conduct at the Boston School for the Deaf in Randolph, where Father Murphy had served as director of counseling. The lawsuit, brought on behalf of former students of the school, alleged that Father Murphy had entered a room while a teenage female student was undressing, and a separate complaint further alleged fondling. Father Murphy denied the allegations. He was placed on administrative leave on August 21, 2004, while the Archdiocese reviewed the reports and conducted an investigation.
The claims related to the Boston School for the Deaf were later withdrawn or dismissed, and Father Murphy was reinstated on April 11, 2006. In April 2010, a new allegation emerged — a South Shore man alleged that Father Murphy had sexually abused him over the course of a year during the early 1970s, while Father Murphy was assigned to St. Agatha’s Church in Milton. Father Murphy again voluntarily stepped aside from public ministry while the matter was investigated. The Archdiocesan Review Board found the allegations unsubstantiated, and Father Murphy was restored to Senior Priest status in September 2010. He passed away on June 11, 2011. The Archdiocese of Boston’s public records reflect that allegations were raised against Father Murphy on multiple occasions during his ministry.
