1 800 686 9921Father Arthur J. Hagan was a priest of the Archdiocese of Boston. On January 19, 2011, attorney Mitchell Garabedian publicly released a list of clergy accused in cases his firm had settled or resolved through arbitration; Father Hagan was among those named. At least one civil claim involving Hagan was resolved through a settlement with the Archdiocese. Hagan died on March 22, 1963.
Because Hagan died decades before public disclosure and prior to any canonical investigation, there was no formal determination of guilt. The Archdiocese’s August 2011 list acknowledged this status, noting that investigations were incomplete or could not be conducted due to his death.

Survivors who experienced sexual abuse by Father Arthur J. Hagan face unique challenges given the historical nature of the allegations and the priest’s death prior to any canonical or criminal review. Civil litigation in Massachusetts may provide a pathway for survivors to seek accountability and hold institutions responsible for past failures. Whether a civil claim may be brought depends on individual circumstances, and survivors are encouraged to speak with an attorney to understand their options.
Civil proceedings may examine whether diocesan authorities adequately supervised clergy, whether warning signs were ignored, or whether patterns of institutional failure created conditions in which sexual abuse was possible and went unaddressed. Such cases may involve review of personnel records, internal correspondence, and evidence of systemic oversight failures.
For many survivors, civil litigation offers more than the possibility of financial compensation — though any recovery may help fund therapy, mental health care, and other support services. It can also provide an opportunity to have experiences acknowledged in a formal setting, and may allow survivors to access institutional records or information long kept from public view. For survivors of historical abuse, civil action may represent one avenue toward recognition that no experience of abuse, however long ago, should go unaddressed.
Every survivor deserves compassion and acknowledgment. This video explains how civil law empowers individuals harmed by clergy abuse to pursue accountability and closure. Justice extends beyond courtrooms; it allows survivors to reclaim their voice and aids them on their healing journey. Survivors across Massachusetts continue proving that truth carries strength and healing begins with being heard.
