1 800 686 9921Father Anthony L. Buchette served within the Archdiocese of Boston and retired in 1997. Civil lawsuits filed against him in 2002 and 2003 alleged that he had sexually abused at least nine boys, all between the ages of 12 and 15, during a period spanning the late 1960s through the early 1980s. According to survivors, Buchette typically lured his victims with offers of trophies and collectibles, using those items to establish proximity and trust before the abuse occurred.
Accusations included allegations of abuse at St. Hugh’s Parish in Roxbury, where survivors reported he brought teenagers to his room after using those inducements. Four of the seven individuals who came forward ultimately participated in early Boston settlement proceedings. His dismissal from the clerical state was finalized in 2005 and publicly announced in March 2006. He was formally included on the Archdiocese of Boston’s list of accused clergy in August 2011.

Father Anthony L. Buchette’s case is notable both for the number of survivors who came forward and for the deliberate method he allegedly used to gain access to minors. The use of trophies and collectibles to draw children into private contact reflects a calculated approach to grooming that demonstrates premeditation. For each of the boys he targeted, the corruption of that initial trust was itself a form of harm before any physical abuse occurred.
The Archdiocese of Boston’s decision to dismiss Buchette in 2005 and to place him on its 2011 list of accused clergy confirms the institutional seriousness attributed to the allegations. Multiple civil lawsuits and settlement participation by four of seven known accusers reflect the scope of accountability that was achieved through civil litigation, though not every survivor who came forward was able to participate in earlier proceedings.
For survivors who experienced abuse at St. Hugh’s Parish in Roxbury or in any other context involving Father Buchette, the civil justice system remains a meaningful avenue. Massachusetts law accounts for the reality that survivors of childhood sexual abuse often do not come forward for many years.
