1 800 686 9921Father Albert A. Fredette was a priest of the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette (M.S.) religious order and was ordained on June 9, 1952. Throughout his ministry, Fredette served in numerous locations across the United States, the Philippines, and Canada, reflecting the wide geographic reach of his assignments over the course of his career. Within the Diocese of Fall River, Fredette was assigned to the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette in Attleboro, Massachusetts, where he had access to a broad community of worshippers and visitors.
Fredette died on June 26, 2000, in Attleboro, Massachusetts. In January 2021, the Diocese of Fall River publicly named Fredette on its official list of clergy who have been publicly accused of sexual abuse of a minor. The Diocese’s list identifies him as “Alfred,” while other records — including his obituary, genealogical records, and the BishopAccountability database — identify him as Albert A. Fredette. This discrepancy across records may have created challenges for survivors attempting to identify him or research his history.
It is important to note that the Diocese’s “Publicly Accused” category, under its own stated criteria, includes individuals publicly named in media reports or third-party advocacy lists and does not represent an independent diocesan finding that the allegations were credible. Nonetheless, Fredette’s inclusion confirms that allegations against him entered the public record and that the Diocese was aware of them. The wide range of his assignments across multiple countries raises serious questions about whether there may be additional survivors in other locations who have not yet come forward or whose allegations have not been publicly documented.

When priests serve across multiple geographic locations and countries, the scope of potential harm extends well beyond any single diocese or region. Massachusetts civil law may provide survivors with legal options to seek accountability from the La Salette religious order and the Diocese of Fall River for their supervision of Fredette and their responsibility to protect those in the communities he served.
The discrepancy between the name listed by the Diocese and the name appearing in other records may itself be relevant to questions about how thoroughly his history was tracked and disclosed. Civil litigation may provide the opportunity to compel both the Diocese and the La Salette order to produce internal records and assignment histories that clarify what was known about his conduct across his various postings.
For survivors, civil claims may allow you to seek compensation for therapy costs, long-term psychological harm, and emotional distress, while also holding both institutions accountable for their respective supervisory responsibilities over a priest whose ministry extended well beyond a single diocese.
