1 800 686 9921Father Alan E. Caparella was a priest who served in the Archdiocese of Boston, MA, including an assignment at St. Leonard’s Parish in Boston, MA. In September 2013, an attorney representing the victim announced that a civil settlement had been reached on behalf of an individual who alleged sexual abuse by Caparella. The alleged abuse reportedly occurred between 1979 and 1983 while Caparella was serving at St. Leonard’s.
Public disclosures surrounding the settlement brought renewed attention to historical allegations involving clergy assigned within Boston area parishes. Although the claim surfaced years after the alleged abuse, the civil resolution represented a formal acknowledgment of the survivor’s report through the legal process.
Caparella’s ministry concluded prior to the public disclosure of the allegation. At the time of his death on March 31, 1991, he was assigned to Holy Ghost Church in Whitman, MA. Because the allegation emerged decades later, it did not result in criminal proceedings. Like many historical clergy abuse matters, the claim instead proceeded through civil litigation, where evidentiary standards and statutes governing survivor claims differ from criminal court.

For survivors of sexual abuse by Father Alan E. Caparella, civil litigation may offer a path toward accountability even when the accused is deceased. Massachusetts law may permit survivors to bring claims against religious institutions whose actions or inaction may have enabled abuse to occur.
These cases may examine institutional responsibility, including hiring practices, supervision, and responses to prior concerns. When evidence shows that Church leadership failed to act on warning signs or protect minors in their care, civil liability may follow. Legal proceedings may also compel disclosure of internal records that clarify what officials knew and how they responded.
Compensation in civil matters may address therapy costs, emotional harm, and the long-term psychological impact of clergy abuse. Yet financial recovery represents only one aspect of justice. Many survivors pursue claims to obtain acknowledgment, public accountability, and validation of experiences that were silenced for years.
Every survivor deserves compassion and acknowledgment. This video explains how civil law empowers individuals harmed by clergy abuse to pursue accountability and closure. Justice extends beyond courtrooms; it allows survivors to reclaim their voice and aids them on their healing journey. Survivors across Massachusetts continue proving that truth carries strength and healing begins with being heard.
