1 800 686 9921Ricardo Gonzalez served as a deacon affiliated with the Archdiocese of Boston, working at two parish communities in East Boston. His role gave him access to children and their families in a setting of institutional trust.
On March 11, 2015, Gonzalez pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting three children between the ages of 12 and 14. The abuse occurred during the 1990s at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish and Our Lady of Assumption Parish in East Boston. The charges to which he pleaded guilty included rape, indecent assault and battery of a child under 14, and unlawful dissemination of material harmful to minors.
Following his guilty plea, Gonzalez was sentenced to four years in prison followed by five years of probation. Criminal accountability was not the only avenue pursued. At least two male survivors who were abused as boys by Gonzalez later received financial settlements in connection with the harm they suffered.

The criminal prosecution of Deacon Ricardo Gonzalez resulted in a prison sentence, probation, and a public record of accountability. For survivors, that criminal process was one part of a broader path forward.
Civil litigation has also provided at least two survivors with financial recognition of the harm they endured. For others who experienced abuse by Gonzalez or within similar institutional settings, civil litigation may offer a potential path toward acknowledgment and financial recovery. Outcomes vary depending on the specific circumstances of each case, including applicable statutes of limitations.
Massachusetts law may provide survivors with legal recourse against both individual abusers and institutions for alleged failures in supervision and protection. If you believe you were harmed, consulting with an attorney can help you understand what options may be available to you.
