1 800 686 9921Deacon Joseph A. Papile was ordained to the diaconate in 1988 and was later included on a list of accused sexually abusive clergy released by Boston attorney Mitchell Garabedian on January 19, 2011. At least one claim involving Papile was settled with the Archdiocese of Boston, though the details of the underlying allegation remain limited. Papile passed away on December 25, 2009, prior to the completion of any canonical or criminal investigation. The Archdiocese’s August 2011 published list noted no formal determination of guilt, either because he died before the process concluded or because proceedings were incomplete at the time of his death.
The case of Deacon Papile reflects the difficulties survivors often face when pursuing acknowledgment and accountability after the death of the accused. Survivors who come forward years or decades later may confront gaps in records or incomplete investigations. Even when formal proceedings were never finalized, civil law may provide a pathway to recognition and validation of their experiences — and reporting and documenting abuse can affirm survivors’ voices and ensure their experiences are acknowledged in the public record.

Survivors may carry long-term trauma, difficulty with trust, and the lasting effects of abuse that occurred in what should have been safe and supportive environments. Civil legal action may offer a channel to address these harms, providing both recognition and the potential for redress. Because Deacon Papile is deceased, civil claims in cases like this are typically directed at the Archdiocese and other responsible institutions — examining how they supervised clergy, responded to complaints, and managed records. Such claims may lead to public recognition of any oversight failures that contributed to harm.
Civil remedies may also promote systemic reform, encouraging religious institutions to implement stronger safeguards and prevent future misconduct. Pursuing justice allows survivors to reclaim agency over their own story, validate their experiences, and contribute to a safer environment for others.
Every survivor deserves compassion and acknowledgment. This video explains how civil law empowers individuals harmed by clergy abuse to pursue accountability and closure. Justice extends beyond courtrooms; it allows survivors to reclaim their voice and aids them on their healing journey. Survivors across Massachusetts continue proving that truth carries strength and healing begins with being heard.
