1 800 686 9921Father Daniel L. Gill served parishes across the Diocese of Springfield from 1958 to 1995 and has been credibly accused of sexually abusing minors during that time. Allegations include abuse that one survivor says began on the day of her First Communion and continued for years. Despite an early warning brought to the attention of church officials in 1977, Gill was transferred to another parish rather than removed from ministry. If you experienced abuse by Father Gill, know that speaking up — even decades later — may lead to acknowledgment and the opportunity to seek justice.

Ordained in 1958, Daniel L. Gill served in numerous Massachusetts parishes and held roles that brought him into regular contact with children for nearly four decades. Diocesan records and investigative reporting document multiple allegations of abuse. One survivor, who came forward in 2002, described repeated sexual abuse beginning at approximately age 8 and continuing until she was 12, occurring during family and church-related events. A separate report filed in 1992 described alleged abuse of another individual when she was 15. A 1977 account by a Pittsfield parishioner described a confrontation with Gill over alleged abuse of a 14-year-old girl. The following year, Gill was transferred to a new parish assignment rather than removed from ministry.
Gill died in 1995. His name was not added to the Diocese of Springfield’s list of credibly accused clergy until August 2022, following a finding by the diocesan Review Board. A financial settlement and years of church-funded counseling reflect the diocese’s acknowledgment of at least one survivor’s claims. The diocese itself acknowledged that one survivor’s case “was not handled according to our procedures when the survivor first came forward back in 2002 and was mismanaged again when she attempted on various occasions to have her complaint heard.” The documented institutional response — a quiet reassignment following a direct confrontation in 1977, and decades of mishandling a survivor’s formal complaint — reflects a sustained failure that delayed accountability for years.
