1 800 686 9921Multiple civil lawsuits and a diocesan investigation allege that Bishop Christopher J. Weldon sexually abused children at parishes across the Springfield Diocese, including St. Michael’s Cathedral in Springfield and St. Anne’s Parish in Chicopee. Allegations describe assaults involving Weldon and other clergy members from the early 1950s through the 1960s, with some survivors reporting that abuse began when they were as young as nine years old. If you sexually were abused by Bishop Weldon, know that survivors continue to seek accountability through civil proceedings, and you are not alone.

Each survivor who has come forward with allegations against Bishop Christopher J. Weldon has demonstrated remarkable courage in breaking decades of silence. Their pursuit of accountability stands as a testament to resilience and the urgent need for transparency within religious institutions.
In 2020, retired Superior Court Judge Peter A. Velis released a report concluding that a survivor’s allegations of abuse by Weldon were “unequivocally credible.” A separate diocesan Review Board had previously found another survivor’s account “compelling and credible” in September 2018. Despite these findings, Weldon’s name was not added to the diocese’s official list of credibly accused clergy until June 2021.
One survivor alleged that Weldon and other clergy participated in repeated sexual assaults at St. Anne’s Parish in Chicopee, describing abuse by multiple clergy members beginning when he was approximately nine years old. This delayed institutional acknowledgment — alongside longstanding questions about whether diocesan records from Weldon’s tenure were preserved — reflects what survivors and advocates have described as a systemic failure to protect children.
Every survivor deserves compassion and acknowledgment. This video explains how civil law empowers individuals harmed by clergy abuse to pursue accountability and closure. Justice extends beyond courtrooms; it allows survivors to reclaim their voice and aids them on their healing journey. Survivors across Massachusetts continue proving that truth carries strength and healing begins with being heard.
