1 800 686 9921Brother Thomas F. Holihan, also known as Brother Rudolph, was a member of the Xaverian Brothers, joining the Order in 1931. An allegation of sexual abuse against a minor was reported in 2004, concerning conduct alleged to have occurred in the early 1960s in Danvers, Massachusetts. Brother Holihan passed away in 1991 — more than a decade before the allegation was reported and nearly three decades before the Order publicly identified him on its list of accused members in July 2019.
During his time with the Xaverians, Brother Holihan served at educational institutions including St. John’s Preparatory School in Danvers, where he was assigned for over four decades — from 1950 until his death in 1991. These positions placed him in direct contact with minors in a context defined by authority, trust, and limited oversight. It is precisely these institutional environments that have enabled abuse to go unreported for years or even decades.
The public listing of Brother Holihan by the Xaverian Brothers reflects a broader recognition that survivors deserve acknowledgment, even when allegations come to light long after the fact. For those who may have experienced abuse at the hands of Brother Holihan, that official recognition is a meaningful — if long overdue — step.
