1 800 686 9921Brother Paul White was a member of the Archdiocese of Boston and part of the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers, also known as the Irish Christian Brothers. In September 2013, a settlement was reached on behalf of a woman who accused White of abusing her in the late 1960s, when she was approximately nine years old.
White was deceased at the time of the settlement, which reflects the posthumous resolution of claims that arose many decades after the alleged misconduct. The incidents reportedly involved violations of trust and exploitation of his position within the religious community. The case against White was part of a broader review of abuse claims against members of the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers, a process required under the 2013 bankruptcy settlement of the order, which aimed to address historical misconduct and provide restitution to survivors.

Survivors of Brother Paul White have avenues to seek acknowledgment and accountability through civil action. Massachusetts law allows survivors to bring forward claims regarding abuse that occurred in childhood. Civil proceedings provide a way for survivors to document their experiences, receive validation, and pursue remedies for the harm they endured.
Legal actions may examine the institutional context in which the abuse occurred, and courts can review whether the religious order or associated institutions responded appropriately to prior reports, whether warning signs were ignored, or whether safeguards failed to protect children under their care. Such examination contributes to the acknowledgment of systemic issues and reinforces accountability.
Coming forward in civil proceedings allows survivors to reclaim their narrative and assert their voice in a formal setting. Civil litigation provides a platform to formally recognize the abuse, record its impact, and seek redress. For many, this process represents a key step in personal healing and ensuring that their experiences are validated and that they are heard.
Every survivor deserves compassion and acknowledgment. This video explains how civil law empowers individuals harmed by clergy abuse to pursue accountability and closure. Justice extends beyond courtrooms; it allows survivors to reclaim their voice and aids them on their healing journey. Survivors across Massachusetts continue proving that truth carries strength and healing begins with being heard.
