1 800 686 9921Brother Lawrence Gauthier was a member of the Priests of the Sacred Heart (SCJ), a Wisconsin-based religious order. He served as a caretaker at Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Lenox, Massachusetts, a facility that operated within the geographic boundaries of the Diocese of Springfield. Allegations against him surfaced through civil litigation filed in March 2002. In that lawsuit, a man reported that Gauthier sexually abused him repeatedly between 1969 and 1972, beginning when he was nine years old and continuing until he was twelve.
The plaintiff alleged the sexual abuse occurred at the seminary property, where Gauthier brought children from the surrounding community onto the grounds. He further claimed that he was one of at least seven to ten total victims. The reported trauma had lasting consequences: the survivor disclosed a history of severe emotional distress and multiple suicide attempts, underscoring the long-term psychological impact often associated with childhood sexual abuse by trusted religious figures.
By 2002, Gauthier had retired from active ministry. He died on May 8, 2010. Although the allegations emerged decades after the reported abuse occurred, they became part of the broader record documenting claims of misconduct within religious training institutions.

Survivors of sexual abuse connected to Brother Lawrence Gauthier may retain the right to pursue civil remedies. Massachusetts law has recognized that the effects of childhood sexual abuse often surface years later, and an attorney can evaluate whether a civil claim remains viable based on the specific circumstances of your experience.
Claims involving seminary environments may focus on supervisory failures, institutional knowledge, and whether Church authorities or order leadership ignored warning signs. Training institutions occupy a position of heightened responsibility when minors are present on their grounds, and when that responsibility is breached, liability may extend beyond the individual offender to the institutions that enabled or failed to prevent the harm.
Civil litigation may allow survivors to seek compensation for therapy, medical treatment, and emotional suffering. It can also compel disclosure of institutional records that may reveal patterns of misconduct or concealment. For many survivors, legal action serves as both a path to personal validation and a mechanism for systemic reform. By coming forward, survivors contribute to increased transparency and reinforce the expectation that religious institutions must protect young people entrusted to their care.
