Brother Joseph A. Thibault, known in religious life as Brother Cuthbert, joined the Xaverian Brothers in 1933. He served at institutions in Connecticut, New York, and Maryland during his ministry, including Mission High School in Roxbury, Massachusetts, and Mount St. Joseph High School in Baltimore. He died on October 8, 1971.
In 2005, Brother Thibault was named in a civil lawsuit alleging sexual abuse of a male student at Mission High School in Boston during the 1956–1957 school year. That lawsuit involved multiple plaintiffs and identified several defendants. According to the attorney who brought the claims, almost all were resolved through settlement.
On July 12, 2019, the Xaverian Brothers included Brother Thibault on their list of deceased members with credible or established offenses against a minor. That entry noted allegations reported in 2007 and later, concerning alleged abuse in the late 1950s to early 1960s in Baltimore, Maryland, and Roxbury, Massachusetts. Brother Thibault was also included on the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s list of credibly accused clergy on July 23, 2019, and was named in the Maryland Attorney General’s Report issued on April 5, 2023.
