Brother John J. Sullivan, also known by his religious name Brother John Augustine, was a member of the Congregation of the Brothers of St. Francis Xavier (Xaverian Brothers). He joined the congregation in 1934 and served at St. John’s High School in Worcester before being assigned to St. John’s Preparatory School in Danvers, Massachusetts, where he remained until his death on January 29, 1939.
Decades later, in 2002, an allegation was reported that Brother Sullivan had sexually abused a minor in 1938 while stationed in Danvers. On July 12, 2019, the Xaverian Brothers publicly named him on their list of deceased or former members for whom there is a reasonable possibility that an alleged offense against a minor occurred — cases in which a full investigation was not possible due to the death of the member or the passage of time. The public disclosure came more than sixty years after the alleged abuse and long after Brother Sullivan’s death.
For survivors, the passage of time does not diminish the impact of childhood clergy sexual abuse. When religious orders release names decades after the events in question, it can raise difficult questions about how allegations were handled and why acknowledgment was delayed. Even when the accused individual is deceased, public identification may represent an important step toward transparency and recognition of harm.

Survivors of clergy sexual abuse by Brother John J.
