Brother James Barron Holsenbach, also known as Brother Stanislaus, was a member of the Marist Brothers and served in educational ministries at Catholic institutions in Massachusetts. His assignments included faculty roles at Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts, where he was in regular contact with minors in an academic setting.
Allegations of sexual abuse surfaced decades after his service. Complaints filed in 2002 alleged that Brother Holsenbach had sexually abused minors during his time at Central Catholic High School, with reported incidents dating to 1958 and 1960. He had served at the school from 1958 until 1961, when his membership in the Marist Brothers was terminated — a termination that school officials later inferred may have been the result of a disciplinary action involving sexual misconduct.
In 2002, Central Catholic High School proactively notified its students, faculty, parents, and alumni of the allegations. School and Marist officials issued a statement acknowledging the complaints and offering counseling resources to those who came forward. The school also notified the Essex County District Attorney’s office. Notably, Brother Holsenbach’s name was later found to have been omitted from the Boston Archdiocese’s 2011 official database of accused clergy — one of approximately 70 religious orders and visiting clerics left off that list.
The reported misconduct occurred while Brother Holsenbach held a position of authority within a school environment. Institutional settings such as Catholic schools can create conditions where trusted adults hold significant influence over young people, making it difficult for students to question or report inappropriate behavior. Public acknowledgment of sexual abuse in these settings often comes decades after the reported conduct, reflecting the long and complex path many survivors face before coming forward.
