1 800 686 9921Brother Dominic Karow, born John Walter Karow, was a Dominican brother who allegedly molested a boy between 1965 and 1968. At the time, he was preparing for ordination but was not approved for vows in 1965. He later worked as a third-grade teacher in the Boston Public Schools for 31 years.
In 1994, diocesan officials allegedly became aware of his past misconduct but did not notify the school where he taught, despite the survivor having reported the abuse to the Archdiocese and his religious order. The claim against Karow was settled in 1996 for $115,000. He retired from teaching in 1997 and was living in Brenham, Texas by 2001. Karow died in 2011.
His name was omitted from the 2011 Boston Archdiocese database but was later included on the Dominicans’ St. Joseph Province list in late 2018. Records indicate he professed in 1962. These details reflect the alleged systemic failures that may have allowed him to remain in positions of authority despite reported sexual abuse allegations — and underscore the long-lasting impact of institutional inaction on survivors.

Survivors of Brother Dominic Karow may have a path to recognition and potential redress for the abuse they endured. Civil action against responsible institutions — including the Archdiocese of Boston and the Dominican order — may provide a formal opportunity to have survivors’ experiences acknowledged and recorded. In some cases, civil claims may also result in financial support that can assist with recovery, counseling, or other personal needs.
Even though Brother Karow has passed away, institutional accountability remains possible. Whether a civil claim may be pursued depends on the availability of institutional defendants, applicable statutes of limitations, and the specific facts of each survivor’s circumstances. An attorney can help evaluate what options may exist.
For many survivors, engaging in a civil process is about more than financial recovery — it is an opportunity to have their suffering formally recognized and to contribute to a broader public record of institutional accountability. These actions help ensure that the failures that allowed abuse to continue are documented, and that future harm may be prevented.
