1 800 686 9921Brother Anthony (Francis) Hogan was a member of the Society of the Divine Word (Divine Word Missionaries) who professed his vows in 1950. Over the course of his religious life, he served in multiple states, including New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. Sexual abuse is alleged to have occurred in 1963 in Duxbury, Massachusetts. He left the Order in 1975 and died in 2008.
The sexual abuse allegations against Brother Hogan were formally recognized when he was named on the Divine Word Missionaries’ Chicago Province list of those credibly accused of the sexual abuse of a minor — a publicly available record maintained by the Order itself. His inclusion on this list reflects the seriousness with which the institution has treated these allegations and provides important historical context for those who may have been affected by his conduct during his years of service.
Brother Hogan’s assignment history placed him across multiple locations over several decades. Those who believe they may have experienced abuse during his ministry are encouraged to speak with an attorney who can evaluate the specific circumstances of their situation.

Survivors of clergy abuse may have avenues to pursue civil remedies that allow them to seek accountability and acknowledgment for the harm they suffered. Depending on the specific facts and circumstances, Massachusetts law may permit civil claims against institutions that failed to adequately supervise clergy or respond appropriately to reports of abuse.
Civil litigation may provide financial compensation for emotional and psychological injuries, and can help establish a public record that contributes to transparency and institutional accountability. Pursuing a civil claim can also empower survivors to reclaim their narrative and seek validation for experiences that may have been minimized or ignored at the time.
These legal processes also serve a broader purpose — encouraging reform within religious organizations and reinforcing the critical importance of oversight and child protection. Even where an abuser is deceased, civil remedies may still provide meaningful recognition and potential accountability for the institutions that enabled the abuse, affirming that responsibility does not disappear with the passage of time.
Every survivor deserves compassion and acknowledgment. This video explains how civil law empowers individuals harmed by clergy abuse to pursue accountability and closure. Justice extends beyond courtrooms; it allows survivors to reclaim their voice and aids them on their healing journey. Survivors across Massachusetts continue proving that truth carries strength and healing begins with being heard.
