A Texas elementary school teacher has been arrested after police say he sexually assaulted a 6-year-old kindergarten student.
According to the Austin American-Statesman, 33-year-old Alfredo Andrade-Gaytan was teaching a bilingual kindergarten class at Reilly Elementary School in Austin. On June 11, the first day of summer school, Andrade-Gaytan kept a 6-year-old female student in his classroom while the rest of the students went to recess. The girl told a parent that afternoon that she had been assaulted.
According to an arrest affidavit, the child was taken to Dell Children’s Medical Center and investigators found DNA evidence on her clothing.
Investigators don’t believe that Andrade-Gaytan knew the student, and he only had her in class one day.
According to the Austin American-Statesman, Andrade-Gaytan had taught in the Austin Independent School District since 2005. He taught at McBee, Linder, and Walnut Creek elementary schools, as well as Lucy Read Pre-Kindergarten School.
Investigators believe Andrade-Gaytan only had the student in class one day. The school district’s police chief, Eric Mendez, called the allegations “disturbing” and said “not typical”, as “usually in these types of incidents the suspect knows their victim or intended victim for some time.”
Andrade-Gaytan was fired from the AISD following the allegations.
