Second alleged victim of Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio accuses priest of sex abuse

Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, has been accused for a second time of sexually abusing a man while he was the Bishop of Camden back in the 1970’s and 80’s. DiMarzio, who now leads the Diocese of Brooklyn, has denied the claim.

“There is absolutely no truth to the allegation,” the bishop said Thursday. “I deny this outrageous and libelous claim.”

Both of DiMarzio’s accusers have said that  they were sexually assaulted as children in two separate parishes in Jersey City.

In this new case, the victim, who remains anonymous,  says  he was about 6 to 7 years old at the time of alleged assaults in 1979 and 1980. DiMarzio at that time was assigned to Holy Rosary Church.

The second accuser, Mark Matzek, said he was about 11 to 12 years old when he was allegedly sexually abused in 1974 and 1975. At the time DiMarzio  served at St. Nicholas Church.

There are serious questions of neutrality regarding Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York in connection with a church investigation into the claims against DiMarzio.

DiMarzio was promoted from parish priest to auxiliary bishop in the Newark archdiocese before coming to Camden in 1999.

A representative of the Newark Archdiocese declined to comment.
