A New York Franciscan brother was let go from his job at a Queens parish following allegations he sexually abused a student at St. Francis Prep, the New York Daily News reported.
Dominic Quigley is accused of sexually abusing a high school junior while teaching at St. Francis Prep in 2003. According to the victim, on one occasion Quiqley lifted his brown Franciscan robe and removed his boxer shorts after asking the teen to expose himself.
Quiqley was working at the American Martyrs Catholic Church in Bayside when the allegations were made.
St. Francis Prep was also the subject of an unrelated lawsuit last year, which alleged that school officials ignored sexual and physical abuse by a longtime assistant football coach.
I commend this brave victim for coming forward. The best way to protect children in the future is to expose predators and the institutions that protect them.
It is my hope that school and church officials now take the safest course of action to protect children by actively seeking out anyone who may have witnessed or suffered abuse by Quigley and urging them to speak to the police.
