Child sex abuse lawsuit alleges pastor knew music teacher was abusing boys in the school

WHAT: Nationally recognized attorney for victims of sexual abuse, JEFF HERMAN (www.hermanlaw.com), announces the filing of a lawsuit against ST. ANDREW CATHOLIC SCHOOL and ARCHDIOCESE OF MIAMI for child sexual abuse by MIGUEL CALA, a former St. Andrew music teacher who was convicted of molestation charges last year.

According to the Complaint:

  • Beginning in or about 2006, MIGUEL CALA began sexually abusing JOHN DOE on a constant basis. CALA sexually abused JOHN at ST. ANDREW SCHOOL repeatedly for approximately 4 years. The sexual abuse included sodomy and oral sex..
  • Upon information and belief, Father George Puthusseril, (“Father George”), who was the head pastor in charge of both ST. ANDREW SCHOOL and ST. ANDREW CHURCH at the time, saw CALA touch JOHN DOE in an inappropriate manner. Father George spoke to JOHN about the sexual abuse by CALA, and told John not to tell his parents.
  • Despite Father George seeing CALA touch JOHN in an inappropriate sexual manner, and despite telling JOHN to not tell his parents, Father George did nothing to prevent further sexual abuse by CALA, and CALA continued to sexually abuse JOHN.

John Doe No. 70 v. Saint Andrews Catholic Church, et. al(case #: CACE-13-012829) was filed in Broward County Court.

Jeff Herman, the attorney for the victim, said, “A school should never endanger a child if they have a safer choice. According to our lawsuit, there were opportunities for the Archdiocese and St. Andrew School to protect children from Cala, but they chose not to make the safer choice.”
