Father Michael Pfleger, outspoken activist and Chicago Priest, accused of sexually abusing a child decades ago

The  Archdiocese of Chicago announced last  week that Father Michael Pfleger, a respected priest  in Chicago, has stepped down from his ministry after a decades-old child sexual abuse allegation.

Cardinal Blase Cupich sent a letter to the St. Sabina community, addressing the child sex abuse accusations against Father Pfleger, dating back more than 40 years ago.

Pfleger was the pastor of St. Sabina Catholic Church, in Auburn-Gresham, since 1981.

Father Michael Pfleger,  was well-known as an anti-violence activist in Chicago.  The matter has been reported to DCFS and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Archdiocese said.

Pfleger posted on  Facebook this in response to the recent allegations , “I can’t possibly respond to the hundreds of Texts, emails, and calls that I have received from all across the nation since yesterday. I am devastated, hurt and yes angry, but I am first, a person of Faith, I Trust God. Please keep me in prayer and the Faith Community of St. Sabina. I have been asked by the Diocese not to speak out at this time. I am Blessed with good leadership and amazing members, whom I love.. Pray also for the person, my life is more than a 40 year old accusation, and on that and my Faith I will stand…The Lord is my Shepherd….. I love you….”

Pfleger, who is now 71, began his career as a priest in the Archdiocese of Chicago back in 1975 and went on to become the pastor of St. Sabina  6 years later. He has been one of Chicago’s most  politically active faith leaders.
