Calvert County man pleads guilty to sex abuse of minor

A Maryland man indicted earlier this year has pleaded guilty to a single count of sex abuse of a minor, reports The Bay Net.

The charges against the defendant, James Edison Smith Jr., were due to allegations of abuse of a female described in court documents as “under the age of 14 years.”

The alleged abuse is said to have occurred between Jan. 1, 2014 and Sept. 30, 2015.

The plea was entered on Thursday, June 23 in Calvert County Circuit Court.

Both Smith and his wife-Michelle Fountain Smith, 30, were indicted.  The couple ran a daycare facility out of their home and owned a second facility in a local industrial park.

Michelle Smith was indicted on one count of neglect of a minor.

The charge pled guilty to by James Smith carries a felony punishable by a maximum of 25 years in jail.

Nothing can undo what happened but I hope the victim in this case gets a sense of validation from James Smith’s guilty plea.  Parents trust that daycares will be safe places for their child but that was not the case here.
