Brooklyn teacher arrested for paying teen to perform sex acts

A Brooklyn teacher was arrested on allegations of sexually abusing a 16-year-old boy, who is also a public school student, New York Daily News reported.

Waris Grant, 37, a teacher at Public School 256 in Bedford-Stuyvesant, is accused of paying the boy to perform a sex act on him.

Grant is charged with promoting prostitution, performing a criminal sex act, and acting in a manner injurious to the child.

The teacher was arrested after the teen told his parents what happened and they called police.

He was reassigned away from students after the allegations were made, a Department of Education official to the New York Daily News. He still collects a $72,900 salary.

While it is unclear how the elementary school teacher knew the boy, it is my hope that Department of Education officials reach out to the families of students who had contact with Grant and urge them to talk to their children about any abuse they may have witnessed or suffered at the hands of the teacher.

It is never easy for a victim of sexual abuse to come forward and I commend the brave victim in this case for reporting the abuse and protecting other children who could have been harmed.
