Jury Awards $3 Million in Sex Abuse Trial

WHAT: Jury awards three million dollars for two girls in a sex abuse trial against the School Board of Highlands County. The four-day trial concluded with the jury holding the School Board of Highlands County liable for the sexual abuse committed by the husband of the manager of the school’s after-care program. The School Board was found liable under both a Title IX claim and a Negligence claim. Each girl was awarded $1.5 million.

Jeff Herman, a nationally recognized attorney for victims of sexual abuse who tried the case, said: “This is a great victory for both girls. I am proud to give them a voice. Even though the verdict is against a public school, we will be able to collect the entire amount since we won the Title IX claim, for which there is no sovereign immunity.”
