Thirteen adult survivors of childhood sex abuse are now suing Devereux Behavioral Health, alleging the nonprofit knew about, yet failed to stop the sex abuse. The victims claim that the staff knew about the sexual misconduct that was going on and did nothing to stop it or help the children.
The victims, all minors at the time of abuse, some as young as 8 when the alleged abuse took place, remained anonymous in the complaint to protect their privacy.
The abuse occurred during the 10 year period of 2004 – 2014. The complaint also brought up allegations that other Devereux facilities across the country also remained negligent when it came to protecting the kids from sex abuse. One case in Florida where a staff member abused a Devereux resident in his care, the child had been sex-trafficked, and this staff member allegedly raped her again.
The lawsuit claims that staff and administration allowed the children to be sexually abused while in the organization’s care.
Hugh Braithwaite, a Devereux spokesperson, said in a statement that Devereux Behavioral Health had “not yet seen the actual lawsuit, we can tell you any reported incidents involving children formerly in our care are heartbreaking.”
