1 800 686 9921Bishop Thomas Ludger Dupre served as a priest and later as the Bishop of the Diocese of Springfield, Massachusetts. Ordained in 1959, Dupre held several pastoral assignments before being appointed Auxiliary Bishop in 1990. He was installed as Bishop of Springfield in 1995, a position he held until his resignation in February 2004.
In 2004, credible allegations emerged that Dupre had sexually abused minors during the years he served as a parish priest. The Diocese of Springfield has acknowledged those allegations, and Dupre appears on the diocese’s official list of clergy with credible findings of sexual abuse of a minor, with more than one credible allegation noted. A Hampden County grand jury indicted Dupre on charges of child rape in September 2004, but prosecutors subsequently dropped the charges after determining that the statute of limitations had expired. Dupre died on December 30, 2016.

Survivors of sexual abuse by Bishop Thomas Ludger Dupre may be able to pursue civil claims against the Diocese of Springfield that raise questions extending beyond the conduct of an individual cleric. Dupre served as Auxiliary Bishop beginning in 1990 and was installed as Bishop of Springfield in 1995, holding senior episcopal authority within the Diocese for more than a decade. During that period, credible allegations of abuse dating to his earlier years as a parish priest reportedly existed. According to multiple news accounts, Dupre allegedly contacted his accusers before both his 1990 appointment as Auxiliary Bishop and his 1995 installation as Bishop in an effort to secure their silence.
Civil litigation may examine what diocesan officials knew — and when — about the allegations against Dupre, what institutional steps were or were not taken in response, and how the Diocese managed his continued rise through its leadership while those allegations reportedly existed. The distinctive nature of this case, involving the diocese’s own bishop rather than a priest under its supervision, raises specific questions about oversight and accountability that civil proceedings may be well positioned to address. Civil litigation may provide survivors the opportunity to seek diocesan records, correspondence, and documentation through the discovery process.
For survivors, civil claims may provide compensation for therapy, long-term psychological harm, and emotional distress, and may potentially create a formal record examining the Diocese’s handling of allegations against its most senior official.
